* Frozen Shoulder and Acupuncture
Scapulohumeral Periarthritis, also well known as "the frozen shoulder "or "50 shoulder", is a symptom that mostly happens to middle-aged and older people. When it occurs, the victim will experience stiffness in his/her shoulder movement often accompanied by pain. It is caused mainly by excessive use of the shoulder joints, which further results in surrounding soft tissues becoming gluey. At the early stage of the symptom, most patients feel only some discomfort, stiffness, or minor pain in their shoulders. However, when it becomes acute, pain can grow unbearable, spreading over the whole shoulder area, even up to the neck area and down to the elbow area. At this time, the patients cannot freely change their body positions. Female patients would often complain that they could not reach to the back to button up their skirts. The symptoms of the frozen shoulder are quite distinct, not easy to be confused with those of other diseases. But be careful that spurs, bone fractures, or other serious diseases may cause the similar symptoms. The condition happens more to females than to males, and it can happen to one or both of the shoulders.

Some patients may forget the pain during the day when they are busily working. But when they are at rest or in sleep during the evening and night, they begin to feel pain. Here are some easy exercises that can help improve the condition: (1) climbing the wall--put up both of your hands and try to grasp the wall, pulling yourself up the wall to as high as you can go and then hanging on there for some time before you relax and prepare for the repeat; (2) circling the earth-- stretch your arm horizontally in front of you and then swing your arm horizontally to the back and front rhythmically; (3) pendulum movement-- stretch your arm downward in front or back of you and swing your arm left and right as far as you can go like a pendulum. When you practice these exercises, use the standing position and part your feet about your shoulder wide. You should make yourself experience pain while doing these exercises. Each exercise must be repeated 20 times at one workout, and you must have one or two workouts a day.
It is easy to treat the frozen shoulder, so there is no reason at all to allow it persist or recur over years. The symptom can be easily treated by acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, which, with their combined effect, can help stimulate the local blood circulation, thus aiding a faster absorption of the excessive ooze resulting from the soft tissue damage. As a result, the damaged gluey soft tissues will naturally heal and restore their normal functions. During the time of acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatment, please also incorporate the above mentioned exercises, which, when carefully and persistently carried out, will help make the treatment many times more effective.
